Teaching through a grain of rice
Today, my children sat on the sofa, enthralled with a single grain of rice resting in their palm. Their sense of wonder was palpable and Baby Bear smiled lovingly. Mouse said, "Wow!" and Bug ate hers, much to the chagrin of her older brother. We had just been reading about the developments of our tiny baby in the second month and found out that their little brother or sister was about the size of a single grain of rice.

Suddenly, we weren't just talking about the pictures anymore. Even three year old Baby Bear seemed to realize that we were talking about a real, living human being...so small and yet so complex. In homeschooling, I sometimes wonder how much my children are absorbing from what I teach. I hope I am laying a foundation for them for later, hope that as they grow and mature they will fully express that which they currently only understand in part. But sometimes I know they got it. For a moment, their minds and their hearts are fully engaged and I know that moment will last. And often that comes through the oddest, most spontaneous acts...like my husband handing them each a grain of rice.

This is my entry to win a camera in the "Capture the Educational Moment" Contest sponsored by Spunky and Academic Superstore.
